In response to this year’s drought – canton Geneva says it wants to bring in a plan to save water in the longer term and is ordering the state-owned Services Industriel de Genève to present a plan by next summer.

The State Councillor in charge of planning, housing and energy – Antonio Hodgers – points out for a canton surrounded by water, there are shortages.

He says there needs to be a campaign to change public behaviour and incentives to use new water saving equipment – such as new shower heads and taps.

He also says there needs to be better coordination with neighbouring France to make sure those communities also have enough water.

He says drinking water needs to be prioritized, which means there could be limits placed on watering lawns, car washes and saunas.
