Canton Geneva’s fight against excessive noise became real for many yesterday.
Police stopped several vehicles in the centre of the city to make sure they were within the law.
These types of controls are likely to be more common after Geneva brought in a strategy to cut street noise by 2030.
Most of the vehicles found to be too disturbing were motorcycles. Police used a noise meter to measure the bike when the throttle was opened.
Some owners were fined. One young rider will have to cough up CHF 1,000 after his small bike was found to have an illegal muffler which created too much noise.
Another owner found modifications to his bike meant it was 10 decibels over the manufacturer’s intentions.
