Geneva is lining up to host COP31 - the 31st UN Conference on Climate Change in 2026.
The next three hosts have already been decided, but Geneva could throw its hat in the ring for the one after.
It’s not a small event, 30,000 participants – including government leaders – over two weeks.
City counsellor, Alfonso Gomez, says Geneva is perfectly set up to hold the meeting.
There are still some hurdles, the city has to get the canton to agree and then the canton has to get Bern on board before a formal application can be made.
But there are already some critics. One advisor for the Swiss People’s Party says the in person meeting should be scaled back – and more use made of video conferencing – in an effort to save the climate.
