Geneva brings in tight protest restrictions

Geneva has brought in tight restrictions for demonstrating ahead of the US Russian summit.

One gathering in support of the Russian dissident Alexi Navalny, which had already had permission to meet on the Place des Nations on Tuesday, has been told it will have to move. It’s likely to be held on the Plainpalais.

All demonstrations have been banned on the right bank in Geneva and around the UN next Wednesday while the summit is underway.

A spokesman for the cantonal security department says this is not about stopping legitimate protests, but logical security concerns. Protests are still allowed outside the security perimeter.
