A French politician is calling for a rethink on how unemployment benefits are paid to cross border workers – as he says the current system is hugely unfair to France.
In 2020, France paid EUR 667m in benefits to frontalier workers from Switzerland. But workers in Switzerland pay social insurance contributions to Switzerland.
Xavier Roseren, who’s a deputy in Haute Savoie, says the current system is an EU agreement and needs to be re-examined.
The European Regional Development Fund – which is part of the EU – does say that it’s a cost anomaly suffered by France.
