Federal judges refuse to rule on right to die case

The Federal Court has refused to rule on a case of a Geneva doctor who helped a healthy elderly woman to die in 2017.

Dr Pierre Beck says he acted in good faith when he prescribed a fatal dose of drugs to the 86-year-old who had told him she didn’t want to live after the death of her husband, who was terminally ill.

The doctor says he decided the woman had full capacity to make the decision.

He’s been convicted of breaking the law by a Geneva court and given a suspended fine.

But he’s appealed to try to force the courts to accept it could be possible in some circumstances to help someone end their life, even if they are physically healthy.

Federal judges have ordered the lower court to reconsider.

The doctor says he pleased with the decision, even if the long running case is not over.

He says it means the Federal Court has not ruled out the possibility of assisting the elderly to die if they choose to.
