Enthusiasm for hosting Ukrainians fades

Some of the earlier enthusiasm for hosting Ukrainian refugees is now fading and many cantons are having to find solutions for longer term accommodation.

There are around 60,000 refugees in the country and more than half are being housed in private homes.

The Conference of Cantonal Social Directors says it’s clear that private accommodation is best suited for an interim period and the Swiss Refugee Service says there are signs of fatigue within host families.

The Federal Department of Justice and Police, which is overseeing the programme says it’s up to the cantons to provide accommodation and says it thanks the private hosts for their commitment.

Authorities in canton Zurich point out the special ‘S’ permit which has been given to Ukrainians runs out in March next year – so they would like clarity on how things will proceed by the end of this year.
