An elderly woman could be fined a million euros for trying to smuggle out a kilo of gold from Switzerland into Germany.

When the 76-year-old was questioned by German border guards at the crossing in Lörrach, she became nervous and argumentative. Guards then saw her try to hide something in her trousers.

It turned out she had 10 gold bars each weighing 100 grams. The price at the time would have been CHF 57,400.

The woman admitted buying the gold from a bank in Zurich. It’s not known why she wanted the gold.
