Double surnames in marriage allowed once more

Switzerland is bringing back double surnames for married couples from 1 January next year

The Federal Council has confirmed the date for a civil code change that reverses a 2013 reform, which forced couples to choose one shared surname or keep their own.

In practice, mostly women gave up their maiden names.

From January, spouses can combine both surnames, with or without a hyphen, in any order.

Already-married couples can also update their official name at the civil registry.
