Civil partnerships more popular with straight people

Although designed for homosexual couples, Civil Partnerships – or PACS – are proving to be very popular with straight people.

Only two cantons allow straight people to form PACS, Geneva and Neuchatel. But there are plans to change the rules at a federal level to open them up for all.

Surprising figures from canton Neuchatel show since 2004, there have been 1,533 PACS formed, but only 89 for same-sex couples.

The popularity seems to be from people who want some form of recognition for their relationship – but not going as far as marriage.

It’s not known how many PACS for straight people have been created in Geneva, as the canton doesn’t keep figures.
