City reverses bar TV football ban

The City of Geneva has reversed its earlier ban on showing the football on bar terraces.

The security and sports councillor, Marie Barbey Chapuis – who brought in the ban at the beginning of the Euro tournament – announced the U-turn on Friday.

She says the initial idea was to drive people to watch the games at the fan zone on the Plainpalais.

But last week 3,000 more than the 12,000-capacity tried to enter. The police had to open all the access points – otherwise there could have been a crush.

The councillor says it was safety concerns that led to the change of heart.

Others also said it was unfair on small businesses.
