The City of Geneva has formally come out against plans to widen the A1 autoroute to six lanes.
The city council says it would have devastating effects. It says it will increase pollution and damage natural areas and arable land.
The final decision on the multi-billion-franc project will be made by voters in November.
Other organisations say it will be far more effective, and sustainable, to spend the money on public transport including a new train line running from Lausanne to Geneva.
