City lure fades due to pandemic

Latest government figures seem to confirm what many have suspected for some time – the pandemic has reduced the attraction of city centers and people are moving away.

The Federal Statistics Office says many city centers show negative internal migration – that excludes the effect of international arrivals.

The top most affected are Zurich, which lost around five and a half thousand and then Geneva down around three and a half thousand.

A study by Credit Suisse published last week adds to the theory Covid is to blame. It shows many people would prefer to be out of built-up areas – now made more viable due to home-working. The survey suggests many believe that to be a permanent shift.

But don’t let that make you think there’s bargain property in cities. The internal shift is more than made up by international immigration.
