Call for stricter laws to separate work and leisure

An MP wants to enshrine in law that workers have the right to be unavailable at times.

Greta Gysin from the Green Party says the fact that workers are getting emails and messages during their time off is creating stress and making people sick.

And with many now working from home for at least part of their time – the separation between work and leisure is becoming increasingly blurred, say supporters.

But the government says it’s not necessary as there are already protections in place. Employers are not entitled to expect staff to respond immediately outside working hours.

The motion is on the agenda for the spring session of parliament which starts next week.
