From this evening, heavy rain is expected across much of Switzerland.
MeteoSwiss has issued a level 4 out of 5 weather alert for Ticino and Graubünden, where up to 150 litres of rain per square metre could fall within 24 hours.
Forecasters say there’s a danger of flooding and mudslides.
The situation is linked to former Hurricane Erin, which has merged with the North Atlantic jet stream and is now driving moist, unstable air toward the Alps.
MeteoSwiss warns rainfall could exceed normal August totals, and further regions in Ticino may also be placed under alert.
