Those arrested following an unauthorized assisted suicide using a gas capsule say they were expecting it and are prepared to accept the consequences.
Yesterday, in a hut in a forest in canton Schaffhausen, a 64-year-old American woman ended her life in a so-called suicide pod.
Although assisted suicide is legal, the government has made it very clear using the capsule is not.
It works by flooding the interior with nitrogen after the user pushes a button themselves.
The inventor of the pod, Philip Nitschke, who lives in the Netherlands – and was not present at the death – says those arrested are the head of the organisation ‘The Last Resort’ which operates the machine, two lawyers and a photo journalist for a Dutch newspaper.
