40 cats found living in basement

A couple in canton Aargau have been banned from keeping animals after inspectors discovered 11 dead rabbits and 40 cats living in the basement.

The cats were being kept in unhygienic conditions.

The cantonal department of Health visited the house in Zofingen after a neighbour’s report.

The cause of the rabbits’ deaths is being investigated - the cats’ condition was deemed acceptable.

Work is now underway to place the cats in new homes – but authorities say that will be a challenge as the shelters are full.

Despite the ban on keeping animals, the couple will continue to look after many of the cats for the time being.
