'11 minutes of hell' protest

Eleven minutes of noise for eleven minutes of hell.

That was the message from the Geneva Collective for the Feminist Strike which held a noisy protest just off the Rue du Marché yesterday evening.

Eleven minutes relate to how long a rape of a 33-year-old woman in Basel lasted in February 2020. A year later, an appeal court reduced the sentence of the attacker from 4 years in jail to 3. The judge concluded the cut in sentence was required as the rape lasted ‘only 11 minutes.’

The reduced jail term was later backed by the Federal Court.

150 protestors shouted, screamed, banged pots and pans and shook bottles full of marbles for 11 minutes to highlight how long 11 minutes was. They say the cut in the sentence is unacceptable.
