GEDS perform "Waiting For Godot"

Listen Again

Wednesday, 29 September 2021 - 7 minutes

Director John Ward and Actor Gary Bird join Katt Cullen in the WRS studio to discuss the upcoming GEDS production of Samuel Beckett's famous play Waiting for Godot. Initially debuted in 1953 in Paris, and received with confusion, this is a play in which not much actually happens and yet it is uniquely profound. We talk about its nature as a comic tragedy: It is a play in which two characters are waiting for Godot - who never appears and neither seems to know why or for what. Yet, there are groundbreaking revelations in the very nature of waiting, that reveals something about who we are as people. It is one of the most significant and groundbreaking plays of the 20th century.

We talk to GEDS about the history and successes of such a famous play, the extended rehearsal period for a play that was supposed to be performed in Spring 2020, and what it's like to finally be preparing to tread the boards once again after a long time away from the spotlight.

The irony that we've spent over a year waiting for "Waiting for Godot" has not been lost on our guests this morning.

Waiting for Godot will be at the Théâtre de L'Espérance 5- 9 October 2021. Tickets are available through geds.ch or theatreinenglish.ch
