Zurich Zoo has killed three of its meerkats and has fed them to the hyenas.
The zoo says it’s to help manage the colony population.
They point out that meerkats live together in large groups and reproduce three times a year.
Keepers say they allow this as it's part of their natural lifecycle, but when the group becomes too large – territorial fights break out.
It adds it’s also more natural for the hyenas to eat complete animals.
The zoo stresses the animals were killed humanely beforehand.
