In what could be seen as another move to make serving in the army compulsory for women, they should attend the army orientation day.
It’s the law that all Swiss men have to go to the orientation day when they reach 18. It’s an opportunity to outline the options available in the army or in civil protection.
Women can go, but they don’t have to.
The Federal Council has responded positively to a suggestion by a Swiss People’s Party MP, Stefanie Heimgartner, that women should have to attend.
In a statement, the Council says it’s ready to examine the proposal.
The government does want to see more women in the army – currently only 1% are female.
The Defence Minister, Viola Amherd, says she would like to see that number at 10%.
There does seem to be growing support to make service compulsory for all Swiss citizens - but it will mean a change to the constitution and so a national vote.
