Canton Vaud has set out exactly what schools should do as the heatwave peaks midweek, leaving the final call to each headteacher.
The canton confirms a three-tier alert — yellow at 25 degrees over three days, orange at 25 to 27 degrees over three to five days, and red for spells of at least ten days.
Schools can change rooms or timetables, cancel activities, or send pupils home.
The department says local autonomy is essential, since even buildings on the same school site can record different temperatures.
Parents should expect school specific decisions rather than a single canton-wide order.
