Vaccine protection time may be lengthened

At a press conference in Bern yesterday, the Federal Health Office says the protection time given by the vaccine may be extended to 10 months. Currently the official advice is that boosters may be needed after 6 months.

The change could have a significant impact on the vaccination certificate which now could be valid for longer.

The Health Office says nearly 30% of the population are now fully vaccinated – that is with two doses – and the vaccines being used in Switzerland are proving effective against the variants.

But it’s thought unlikely as many as 80% will ever be vaccinated. Polls suggest it won’t be higher than 75% due to hesitancy. But it is hoped most vulnerable people and 60% of the population will be vaccinated by the end of July.
