Geneva-based UNHCR warns that shrinking international aid could leave 8.3 million refugees and displaced people without protection this year

The agency's funds fell from CHF 4.3 billion in 2024 to CHF 3.2 billion in 2025, and by end of July it had received only 32% of the CHF 7 billion it needs for 2026.

Chad, Sudan, Iraq and Syria are among the hardest hit, with hundreds of thousands losing access to registration, safe spaces and reintegration support.

The Geneva agency, which has already shed nearly 5,000 jobs, is urging donors to step up before core programmes shut down entirely
