Ukraine summit could be in Geneva

Geneva is being touted as a possible venue for a meeting between the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky and the Russian leader, Vladmir Putin.

The idea is being pushed by the French president, Emmanual Macron.

More recent meetings about the Ukrainian conflict have been going on in other countries, such as Saudi Arabia or Turkey. Switzerland may be disadvantaged as the Russians don’t see it as neutral as it has applied sanctions against the country.

But there are also many advantages: Switzerland has the trained security personnel and specialists used to dealing with conflicting parties.

Many are suggesting the airport will be a suitable venue – which would mean there would be no disruption to the city, unlike when Putin met Joe Biden a few years ago.

The Swiss government will also offer diplomatic protection to Putin, despite arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court.
