Town in McDonald's dispute

After years of struggling, fast food franchises are beginning to take hold in Switzerland – but not without controversy.

Subway now has 50 branches and another 70 are planned in the next five years – the last five years has seen a further 8 KFCs, now at 17 and Burger King added nine last year to make the total at nearly 100 outlets.

But obviously the biggest is McDonalds – currently 183 restaurants, but that number will be 200 soon.

Or maybe 199, if residents in the town of Windish in canton Aargau get their way.

Locals complain the plans for a 158-seat restaurant with a drive thru is too close to several schools and kids will have to walk past the main entrance. Parents worry about increased noise and traffic.

But McDonalds says the site has a supermarket car park nearby and they don’t believe there’s an increased risk.

Parents are protesting at the proposed site – but their kids, who clearly didn’t read the memo, were reported shouting ‘McDonalds is good.’

An anti-McDonald’s petition has been launched – which collected a few hundred signatures. But then shortly after, a pro-petition started up – that also has a few hundred names.

The final decision will be with the council, who promise to look at the application fairly.
