Tough new banking rules possible

The Federal Council has launched consultations on new banking rules that could withhold or claw back bonuses from top banking executives.

Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter says the goal is to prevent the kind of excessive risk-taking that toppled Credit Suisse in 2023.

The proposals would also strengthen corporate governance, sharpen crisis preparedness, and give the financial market supervisor FINMA more powers.

The consultation runs until November — and comes as Bern pushes UBS to tighten capital rules for its overseas subsidiaries, a move the bank is resisting on competitiveness grounds.
