The right-wing Swiss people’s party says the current asylum situation is ‘catastrophic’ and says the government should set up asylum centres near the border or even copy a British idea and process applicants in Africa.
The party also complains that non-Swiss who are convicted of a crime are not systematically deported.
The State Secretariat for Migration is estimating there will be 40,000 applications for asylum this year – a new record.
Correspondents say the Swiss People’s Party know their ideas will never happen. But it allows the party to position itself as being tough on immigration in this election year.
