Support for closer EU links

Although Switzerland and the EU failed to agree on a new framework to tie together several different accords – support for closer cooperation with the trading bloc remains strong.

A survey by GfS.bern on behalf of the pharmaceutical sector shows 90% support an agreement with the EU.

Access to the EU market and ease of travelling through Europe are strong drivers for close links.

The survey shows there’s general concern for the current state of EU relations and many believe unless the current agreements are updated, the Swiss export market will suffer.

Interpharma which commissioned the survey, say there’s clear signs the people are willing to compromise on various issues and want a pragmatic solution.

As many as 75% say they will accept the role of the European Court of Justice to rule in the case of disputes with Switzerland. The role of the EU court is a major sticking point
