Summer weather only getting hotter

Roughly one summer in two will be hotter than 2026, according to an ETH Zurich climatologist

He says current global climate policies point to a Switzerland where this year's heat becomes routine, not exceptional.

Basel and Sion recorded more than 50 days at 30 degrees this summer, soils dried out, and glaciers lost their snow cover above 4,000 metres.

It’s estimated that several hundred additional deaths in Switzerland this summer were linked to the heat, and around 35,000 across Europe.

He urges Swiss cities to build differently — with shading, night ventilation and other designs — planning for 2100, not the past 50 years.
