Search for dumped munitions in Lake Geneva

Decaying munitions in Lake Geneva (c) Odysseus

Work will start in a few weeks to map areas of Lake Geneva which have been used as a munitions dump in the 20th Century.

There have been calls for years for the potentially dangerous waste to be cleared.

While it’s known there is ammunition at the bottom of the lake – the exact type and amount is uncertain.

Many believed it was safer to be left there – as it would now be covered by sediment. But an exploration in 2019 discovered ammunition boxes on the lake bed in a severely corroded condition.

The big question is who should pay for it? As much of the dumping was carried out by a now defunct private company – legally, it falls on the canton.

Geneva is requesting assistance from federal authorities – and is waiting for a decision.

All the ammunition lies in waters within the Swiss borders.
