Switzerland's national railway is under fire for a blog post advising passengers to travel outside peak hours if they want a seat
SBB notes that more than 70 percent of seats are empty on average across the day, and suggests staggering journeys, checking occupancy forecasts, or paying CHF 5.- to reserve a seat.
One commuter said the advice was "absurd" and "passive-aggressive", asking whether he was supposed to arrive at work at eleven o'clock, and pointing out that a full-year rail pass already costs CHF 3,995.-. SBB spokesperson Reto Schärli says the tips are meant only for passengers with some flexibility, and that peak-hour trains already run at maximum length.
The company accepts that further capacity expansion is still needed.
