Russia will have to pay for monument cleanup

Suvorov Memorial

The Russian government will have to pay to have the Suvorov Memorial cleaned after blue and yellow paint was splattered on it.

The monument marks the deaths of thousands of Russian soldiers who fought Napoleon’s forces in 1799 and the General who led them.

It was built by the Russian government 100 years after the battle and is still owned by them.

After the paint - in the colors of the Ukrainian flag - was left on the monument, the Russian embassy called it unacceptable and said the Swiss authorities should clean it.

But it is up to the Uri cantonal government – who says Russia needs to pay.

Local police have asked for witnesses.
