Road vote splits politicians

The upcoming vote on widening autoroutes is causing a split within the State Councils around the lake.

Formally cantons Geneva and Vaud are urging a ‘yes’ vote for a third lane on the A1 between Geneva and Nyon.

But dig deeper – not all the ministers are in favour. In Geneva, Green Party member Antonio Hodgers says he’ll vote ‘no’ as will Vassilis Venizelos, environment minister in Vaud.

It’s also unusual for cantonal governments to weigh in on federal votes.

The federal council says the road widening programme is essential to cure jams.

But figures from the Federal Office of Spatial Development, which are now being referred to by some campaigners, say car traffic is set to decline naturally.

By 2050, there’ll be 5% fewer cars based on 2017 figures – people will be opting for public transport.

Also, there’ll be more working from home, cutting commuter traffic.

But we will still love online shopping – delivery vans will be up nearly 60%.
