Power cut worries recede - for now

The threat of power cuts this winter is receding – but there remains a danger of shortages if the weather becomes colder.

The main change is more French nuclear reactors are coming back on-line after maintenance, which had been delayed due to covid lockdowns.

France is traditionally a big exporter of electricity – but it has been buying power this winter.

The French power grid has lowered its threat level to medium.

Nine reactors are now back up and running compared to October – but 16 are still idle.

But there are still concerns if the weather gets colder again – especially after January – but we should be OK for the holidays.
