Geneva's 24-week parental leave is finally on track after the National Council cleared the last federal obstacle on yesterday
The Green Liberal initiative, backed by nearly 58% of Geneva voters in June 2023, adds eight weeks for the second parent to the existing 16 weeks of maternity leave.
Its implementation had been suspended in 2024 because it clashed with federal loss-of-earnings law — but Parliament revised that law in December to let cantons go further.
Geneva families can now expect the extra weeks to take effect.
One gap remains: foster parents are still excluded, and MPs say that fight now moves to Bern.
