Geneva is taking exceptional measures as a heatwave pushes temperatures towards 37 this weekend.
The Department of Public Instruction has suspended compulsory attendance for first and second-year primary school pupils on Monday and Tuesday.
Schools will remain open with staff available, but parents may keep children at home if they wish.
Other classes will continue, while schools have been told to implement heat protection measures, including cancelling outdoor activities, keeping classrooms ventilated and encouraging regular hydration.
