No go for Geneva tram extension

Geneva's government will not appeal a court ruling that halted the tram 15 extension across the border to Saint-Julien-en-Genevois

The Conseil d'Etat says fighting on could have delayed the project by years without securing it, so the entire cross-border route must now be redesigned.

In July, the Federal Administrative Court sided with opponents who argued the planned bypass road south of Perly would take too much farmland.

In the meantime, bus line 80 between Saint-Julien and Geneva will run more often, and the Bardonnex border crossing will be widened to shift traffic onto the motorway.

A new project team is due by the end of this year to draft a fresh tram route.
