Geneva has opened a new underground archaeological site displaying nearly 2,000 years of the city's history
The Saint-Antoine site covers close to 1,000 square metres and cost CHF 14.5 million to protect and open to the public.
Visitors walk around a Gallo-Roman settlement from the first century, a necropolis of more than 300 tombs, and part of the fifth-century church of Saint-Laurent.
The only skeleton on display belonged to a woman aged between 25 and 50 at her death.
Three glass roof lights bring in daylight and let passers-by glimpse the excavations from the esplanade above.
