A new system to recycle heat created by a data centre will be operational this summer.

Geneva tech company infomaniak is building a new data centre in the basement of a housing complex at the new eco-cooperative, La Bistoquette, in Plan-les-Ouates.

The heat generated by the servers will be diverted to warm 6,000 people.

The secure centre will initially house 800 servers - but that number is expected to increase to several tens of thousands.

It won’t use air conditioning to cool the machines - but will cycle the warm air to be used by residents, the returning air will be used to cool the computers.

The heat pumps will be powered by solar energy.
