New autoroute threatens Geneva communes

Soral - (c) soral.ch

A proposed new French autoroute will run close to the Swiss border and could be a disaster for the picturesque Geneva commune of Soral.

The mayor says the road will mean a new entry point to Geneva through the village.

But it’s not just Soral which is opposed, the French town of Viry is also fighting the plan – together with environmental groups and the canton.

The new section of the A40 will head to the Bardonnex border.

Opponents say it’s an idea from another age and goes against plans adopted by Geneva to cut car use by 40% by 2030.
