Mothers in some cantons are fighting regulations that are forcing young children to wear masks.
Although federal regulations exempt those under 12 from wearing masks – some cantons have brought in stronger rules. Basel-Country says those from the age of 10 have to use a mask, and Solothurn is even younger.
One mother from Solothurn is annoyed her 11-year-old needs to wear a mask – she says they do more harm than good for children, although she stresses, she’s not a corona sceptic. Another from Zurich says many mothers worry about speaking out – but she says the number supporting the movement show the level of worry.
In this case, the mothers do have some support from the experts. Walter Zingg from the corona task force says it does make sense for older children to wear a mask, but he says the younger ones don’t wear them properly, they take them off and continue to touch them. Also, on a purely practical level, many won’t fit them.
