A Green Party parliamentarian is proposing that air travellers pay more tax on each flight they take over the course of a year.
Christophe Clivaz says it will discourage excessive air travel.
On average, we take 1.6 flights a year – that’s two or three times more often than neighbouring countries.
The idea the first flight in a year would be tax free – then each subsequent flight would be more expensive.
Clivaz says the tax would be progressive as it would hit the wealthier more.
