The Mont-Blanc glaciers, just over an hour from Geneva, are melting a month ahead of schedule after a low-snow winter and June's record heatwave.
The Chamonix Guides president Olivier Greber says he has never seen the mountains this dry in early July.
High-altitude guides are already facing fewer viable routes, with rockfalls multiplying and the freezing level climbing past 4,000 metres.
