The retail sector is warning it cannot function without immigration.
Speaking to Schweiz am Wochenende, the Migros CEO, Mario Irminger, said demographic change and upcoming retirements mean foreign workers are essential to maintain current service levels.
At Migros subsidiaries like Micarna, a majority of staff are already non-Swiss.
He cautioned proposals to cap the population could worsen labour shortages, with around 1,000 vacancies already hard to fill.
Without immigration, he warned, consumers could face reduced opening hours, fewer shops and less choice.
