A man was killed in canton Valais yesterday when a ceremonial cannon misfired.
For many years, during the Corpus Christi parade, cannons have been fired in the town of Raron.
The custom is said to have started around the year 1600 during the Counter-Reformation.
Locals say the 65-year-old victim had been part of the tradition for many years and was an experienced soldier. Witnesses say the cannon fired too early.
Cantonal and federal investigators have launched an investigation.
