Man faces hefty fines for illegal cats

Federal Customs Administration

A man is facing a hefty fine after being caught at Bardonnex customs for trying to illegally import highly valuable cats.

Customs officers say the 27-year-old had an adult female with her 4 kittens in one cage and two other adult cats in a second.

None of the animals had been cleared for transport and the kittens lacked passports and chips.

The cats are the highly sought-after Bengal breed and worth thousands of francs.

They had been travelling for more than 18 hours.

The man is facing fines for improper animal transport, not having the right documents and  - as the cats are very valuable, trying to avoid VAT.

The cats are now being looked after by the authorities.
