Lake Geneva steamships at risk

A majority of National Councillors want the Confederation to step in to rescue Lake Geneva's historic steamships

103 of the 200 federal MPs have signed a motion calling for regular federal funding to maintain and restore the Belle Époque fleet, operated by the CGN.

The company estimates it needs CHF 150 million to keep the century-old boats sailing.

The motion asks for continuous support without raising overall costs — a response to the public outcry after the Simplon's breakdown in March 2024.

For many of us in Geneva the paddle steamers are a defining symbol of the lake.
