Jobless rate back at covid levels

The unemployment rate has climbed to its highest level since the Covid crisis.

New figures from the Federal Statistics Office show the jobless rate rising to 5.2% in the first quarter, with around 266,000 people unemployed - 26,000 more than a year ago.

Despite the rise in unemployment, the number of people in work has still increased slightly compared with last year.

In comparison, the unemployment rate in the EU is running at 6.2% - but it’s falling slightly, but here the trend is up.
