High rental prices creep over the border

There is "nothing to rent" in Annemasse — unless you are paid in Swiss francs

That’s the message from letting agents from across the border where the market has toughened so far against local French salaries that even young workers with permanent contracts are being turned away.

Only cross-border commuters with Swiss salaries or buyers who can pay cash for a down payment stand a chance.

Haute-Savoie's new-build market has collapsed from 3,200 sales in 2019 to 1,500 in 2024, with supply drying up in the same period.

The squeeze hits every expat and frontalier looking to move to the French side of the border and adds pressure to Geneva's already stretched rental market next door.
